What Is a Medical Visa for Vietnam?
International patients travelling to Vietnam for medical treatment generally do not apply for a separate standard visa category called a “Medical Visa.” Instead, the appropriate entry arrangement depends on nationality, visa-exemption eligibility, expected length of stay, number of entries required and individual circumstances.

For many patients travelling to Vietnam for planned short-term treatment, an e-Visa or visa-free entry may be the most relevant option. Visa planning should be considered together with the medical schedule because consultations, diagnostic tests, treatment, recovery and follow-up appointments can all affect how long a patient needs to remain in Vietnam.
Does Vietnam Have a Medical Visa?
Vietnam does not currently have a general-purpose visa category officially called a “Medical Visa” for international patients. The term is commonly used when discussing travel abroad for healthcare, but most patients entering Vietnam for planned treatment use an applicable e-Visa, visa exemption or another entry arrangement depending on their circumstances.
Vietnam’s immigration framework does contain other visa categories and provisions for specific circumstances, including certain cases related to medical treatment. However, these are not the standard route for most international patients travelling to Vietnam for planned healthcare. For the majority of patients, the practical starting point is to determine whether they qualify for visa-free entry or an e-Visa.
An e-Visa can be a practical option for eligible foreign nationals travelling for consultations, dental treatment, cosmetic procedures, eye care, IVF and fertility treatment, health check-ups or other short-term healthcare needs. It can be issued for single or multiple entry with a maximum validity of 90 days. Some nationalities may also enter Vietnam without a visa for a specified period, which may be sufficient when the treatment and recovery schedule fits comfortably within the permitted stay.
The appropriate option should therefore be selected according to the patient’s nationality, planned medical timeline and travel requirements rather than simply searching for a visa labelled “medical.”

Vietnam e-Visa Requirements and Application Process
Patients planning to use an e-Visa should prepare the required passport and travel information before beginning the application. The standard application requires a valid passport or international travel document, a digital portrait photograph, an image of the passport biodata page, personal information and details relating to the intended stay in Vietnam. The information entered should correspond accurately with the passport.
A hospital invitation letter is not listed among the basic documents required for a standard individual e-Visa application. Medical travellers should nevertheless prepare relevant healthcare documents separately, such as previous medical records, diagnostic results, scans, medication information, treatment history or a referral where relevant. If an appointment has already been arranged, keeping the hospital or clinic confirmation with the travel documents can also help keep the medical journey organised.
The e-Visa application itself is completed online through Vietnam’s official electronic visa system. Patients should prepare the required documents, enter their information carefully, upload the passport and portrait images, pay the applicable visa fee and keep the electronic application code for checking the status. If the application is approved, the e-Visa should be downloaded or printed and reviewed before travelling.

Vietnam e-Visa Cost, Processing Time and Length of Stay
The official e-Visa fee stated in the draft is US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry. These are government e-Visa fees only; additional charges may apply if a traveller chooses to use a private visa agency or another service provider.
The stated processing time for a complete application is within three working days after the Immigration Department receives the required information and fee. Medical travellers should still apply in advance rather than relying on the minimum processing period, particularly when surgery, IVF treatment or specialist appointments have already been scheduled. Additional time may be necessary if information needs to be corrected or further processing is required.
A Vietnam e-Visa can be issued for up to 90 days and may allow either single or multiple entry. For medical travellers, the permitted stay should be considered together with the complete healthcare schedule. A health check-up or short dental treatment may require only several days, while surgery or more complex care may involve pre-treatment assessment, recovery and multiple follow-up appointments over several weeks. If the expected medical journey may exceed the permitted stay, immigration options should be reviewed before travelling.
What Should Medical Travellers Prepare Before Coming to Vietnam?
Visa preparation is only one part of organising treatment abroad. Patients should also prepare the medical information that the healthcare provider may need before the first consultation. Depending on the condition, this may include previous medical records, blood tests, imaging, medication information, surgical history or a doctor’s referral.
Different treatments may require different records. Dental patients may benefit from preparing previous dental records or X-rays, while patients considering eye treatment may need earlier examination results. IVF and fertility patients may also be asked to provide reproductive health records or previous treatment information. If important documents are not in English or Vietnamese, accurate translation can make it easier for healthcare professionals in Vietnam to review the medical history before or during the consultation.
Patients should also consider the wider treatment journey before confirming travel. Hospital or clinic selection, appointment scheduling, accommodation, airport transfers, local transportation, interpretation and follow-up arrangements may all need to fit around the medical schedule. Clarifying these details before purchasing non-refundable flights can help avoid building the trip around an unrealistic treatment timeline.
