Physical SIM or eSIM: Which Is Better for Medical Travel?
Both physical SIM cards and eSIMs can work well in Vietnam. A physical SIM can be purchased after arrival and may be useful for patients who want a Vietnamese phone number or prefer assistance from a local mobile operator. The main consideration is that the traveller may need to remove or replace their existing SIM unless the phone supports dual SIM functionality.
An eSIM can often be installed before departure, allowing patients to have mobile data available soon after landing without removing their existing physical SIM. This can be particularly convenient when airport pickup, accommodation or healthcare appointments have already been arranged. International travel eSIMs are another option for shorter stays, although data allowances, coverage and whether a local phone number is included will depend on the provider.
| Option | Advantages | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Physical SIM | Widely available in Vietnam and may include a local phone number | Requires a compatible unlocked phone and may require replacing the existing SIM |
| Local eSIM | Can avoid changing the physical SIM and may provide local mobile service | Device must support eSIM and meet activation requirements |
| International eSIM | Can often be prepared before travelling and provide data shortly after arrival | Data allowance, validity and network access vary between providers |
Before purchasing any option, check that your phone is unlocked and compatible with the selected SIM or eSIM service. eSIM users should confirm that their device supports eSIM technology and that activation can be completed for use in Vietnam.
For many international patients, an eSIM may be convenient when immediate Internet access is the priority. A Vietnamese SIM or local eSIM may be preferable when a local phone number is needed for calls, bookings or other services during a longer stay.

However, a Vietnamese SIM may be more suitable if you need a local Vietnamese phone number or prefer to receive assistance directly from a local mobile operator.

Mobile Networks Available in Vietnam
Vietnam’s major mobile network operators include Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone. All three provide mobile services in major destinations such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, although coverage and available plans can vary by location.
Viettel
Viettel is one of Vietnam’s largest mobile network operators and is widely used across the country. It may be a practical option for patients whose medical journey includes several cities or travel outside major urban areas. Viettel offers different prepaid voice and data packages, so the appropriate plan will depend on the traveller’s expected usage and length of stay.

VinaPhone
VinaPhone, operated by VNPT, provides mobile voice and data services throughout Vietnam and is commonly used in major cities. It offers a range of prepaid data options that may suit patients staying primarily in destinations such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.

MobiFone
MobiFone is another long-established Vietnamese mobile network operator and offers prepaid as well as tourist-oriented plans. For example, its TR109 tourist package is listed at VND 109,000 for 20 days with 4 GB of data per day. Plan availability and conditions may change, so visitors should confirm current details before purchasing.

There is no single mobile network that will be the cheapest or most suitable for every medical tourist. If most of your treatment takes place in a major city, choosing a valid plan with enough data and a sufficient validity period may matter more than small differences between operators. Patients travelling to rural, mountainous or more remote destinations should check network coverage for each location in advance.
Buying and Registering a SIM Card in Vietnam
International visitors can purchase physical SIM cards from major airports, official operator stores and authorised retailers. Buying at the airport can be convenient for travellers who need mobile access immediately after arrival, but it is still important to confirm the package details before paying. Check the data allowance, validity period, whether calls or SMS are included and whether the plan will remain active for the full duration of your stay.
Foreign visitors should generally have their passport available when registering a Vietnamese SIM. The registration process may involve linking personal information to the passport, and additional identity verification may be required depending on the operator and type of service. Some eSIM services for international visitors may also request passport information, a portrait photograph or other information related to the traveller’s stay.
Because registration and activation requirements can differ between operators and SIM types, patients should check the current requirements before travelling or purchasing a plan. Using an official operator or authorised retailer can also make it easier to receive assistance if activation or registration problems occur.
How Much Mobile Data Do Medical Tourists Need?
The appropriate data allowance depends on how long the patient will remain in Vietnam and how the phone will be used. Travellers who mainly use messaging apps, email, maps, translation services and appointment communication may not need a particularly large package. Patients who expect frequent video calls, cloud access, large medical document downloads or heavier daily Internet use may need considerably more data.
The validity period is just as important as the data allowance. A plan offering a large amount of data is of limited value if it expires before the treatment and follow-up period is complete. Patients staying for several weeks for surgery, IVF, dental rehabilitation or other treatment should therefore compare both daily or total data limits and the number of days the package remains active.
Mobile data can be particularly useful for communicating with a healthcare provider or Case Manager, opening maps, arranging rides, receiving appointment updates, accessing medical records and staying in contact with family members. Patients should still avoid relying entirely on one communication method for urgent medical issues and should keep the healthcare provider’s emergency or direct contact information available when appropriate.
Should You Buy a SIM Before or After Arriving in Vietnam?
Buying an eSIM before departure can be convenient for patients who want Internet access immediately after landing. It can be installed while the traveller still has a reliable Internet connection at home and activated according to the provider’s instructions when travelling.
Buying a physical Vietnamese SIM after arrival may be better for patients who want a local phone number or prefer help from a local operator. This can also be practical for longer stays where local calls or SMS may be useful.
For medical travellers, the lowest price should not be the only consideration. Having a working connection upon arrival may be important when contacting an airport driver, accommodation provider, hospital, clinic or medical coordinator. The most practical option is therefore the one that provides sufficient coverage, data and validity for the entire medical journey.
