Day Surgery Centers in Vietnam: What International Patients Should Know

How Day Surgery Works in Vietnam
Day surgery is generally intended for selected procedures that do not require prolonged inpatient monitoring. Depending on the healthcare provider, this may include certain planned procedures in general surgery, urology, gynecology, orthopedics, ENT and other specialties. However, suitability depends on more than the procedure itself. The medical team may consider the patient’s medical history, surgical complexity, anesthesia requirements, expected recovery and whether appropriate support is available after discharge.
Several healthcare facilities in Vietnam provide day surgery or outpatient surgical services. Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, for example, has operated a dedicated Day Surgery Unit, while Vinmec provides selected day surgery and outpatient surgical services. Vietnam’s ambulatory surgery sector is also developing beyond the traditional hospital model, with Family Medical Practice announcing an out-of-hospital Ambulatory Surgical Center in Ho Chi Minh City in 2026.
After a procedure, patients are monitored during the initial recovery period. If their condition meets the facility’s discharge criteria, they may be allowed to return to their hotel, serviced apartment or other accommodation on the same day. The treating surgeon and anesthesia team should determine whether same-day discharge is appropriate for each individual patient.
Day Surgery vs Inpatient Surgery

| Factor | Day Surgery | Inpatient Surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Hospital stay | Usually discharged on the same day | Requires an overnight or longer stay |
| Typical use | Selected procedures and appropriate patients | More complex procedures or cases requiring longer monitoring |
| Recovery | Mainly continues outside the healthcare facility | Begins with continued hospital monitoring |
| Convenience | Can reduce time spent in hospital when medically appropriate | Requires a longer hospital stay |
| Post-operative monitoring | Limited facility monitoring before discharge, followed by outpatient recovery | Ongoing monitoring during hospitalisation |
| Planning for international patients | Requires a clear recovery, transport and follow-up plan | More immediate clinical support is available during the hospital stay |
Day surgery is not inherently better than inpatient surgery. The appropriate setting depends on the procedure, anesthesia, patient health and expected recovery. A shorter hospital stay may be convenient, but convenience should not take priority over clinical suitability or the need for post-operative monitoring.
What International Patients Should Plan Before Day Surgery
For international patients, the main difference with day surgery is that a significant part of the recovery takes place outside the hospital. Before treatment, patients should make sure they have appropriate accommodation, reliable transportation and access to follow-up care after discharge. If anesthesia, sedation or strong pain medication will be used, it is also important to ask whether a companion is required during the first hours or night after the procedure.
Patients should not plan their return flight solely around the surgery date. The treating medical team should advise how long the patient should remain in Vietnam, when follow-up appointments are required and when long-distance travel may be appropriate. Even when discharge takes place on the same day, the recommended recovery period may extend for several days or longer depending on the procedure.
Before booking, international patients should also confirm where the surgery will actually take place, who will perform it and whether the facility is licensed and equipped for the planned procedure. A consultation at an international clinic does not necessarily mean that the surgery itself will be performed at that clinic. Patients should ask about the surgeon, anesthesia team, operating facility, expected length of observation and post-operative care arrangements.
The financial side should also be clarified in advance. A quotation may include the main procedure but exclude consultations, diagnostic tests, anesthesia, medication, medical supplies or follow-up appointments. Requesting a written breakdown helps patients understand the likely total cost rather than relying only on the advertised surgery price.
Follow-up and Complication Planning After Day Surgery
Complications can occur after any surgical procedure, including procedures intended for same-day discharge. Before treatment, patients should understand what support will be available after they leave the facility, which symptoms require urgent medical attention and who should be contacted if a problem develops during the evening, overnight or after returning to their accommodation.
Patients should also ask whether the facility has an emergency pathway and which hospital or medical team would provide additional treatment if admission becomes necessary. Discharge instructions should clearly explain medication, wound care, activity restrictions, warning signs and the follow-up schedule. For international patients, this information should be provided in a language they can understand.
These arrangements become particularly important when a patient is travelling alone. A technically successful procedure is only one part of the medical journey; safe discharge, practical recovery support and access to follow-up care are also important considerations when deciding whether day surgery is appropriate.
