Can You Extend Your Stay in Vietnam for Medical Treatment?

A visa or permitted stay in Vietnam may be extended in some circumstances, depending on your current immigration status, the type of visa or entry permission you hold and the applicable immigration procedure. However, receiving medical treatment does not automatically guarantee an extension or allow a patient to remain in Vietnam beyond the period already permitted.

Vietnam also does not currently have a separate standard visa category officially called a “Medical Visa” for international patients. The term is sometimes used informally when discussing travel for treatment, but patients generally enter Vietnam under an applicable e-Visa, visa exemption or another permitted visa or entry category. If treatment is expected to require a longer stay, patients should therefore consider both the medical timeline and their immigration status before making travel arrangements.

What Documents and Processing Time Should You Expect?

The documents required will depend on the specific immigration procedure and the traveller’s circumstances. In general, patients may need a valid passport, current visa or entry information, temporary residence details and the relevant immigration forms. In some cases, treatment-related documents or supporting information from a hospital or clinic may also be requested, together with any additional documents required by the Vietnamese immigration authority.

Processing times vary depending on the procedure and whether the application is complete. For certain temporary residence extension procedures, the published processing period may be up to five working days after a complete application is received, although individual cases can take longer if additional information or documents are required. Patients should therefore avoid leaving an immigration application until the final days of their permitted stay.

What If Your Treatment Takes Longer Than Expected?

Medical treatment does not automatically extend a patient’s permitted stay in Vietnam. If treatment, recovery or follow-up appointments may continue beyond the current authorised period, patients should review their immigration options as early as possible. Depending on the circumstances, an eligible organisation or individual in Vietnam may need to assist with the relevant procedure.

Before travelling for treatment, international patients should also check their visa or entry requirements through official Vietnamese immigration channels and confirm how long they are permitted to remain in the country. The expected treatment schedule should include not only the main procedure but also consultations, diagnostic testing, recovery and follow-up care, as these can affect the total length of stay.

Where possible, patients should avoid planning flights and accommodation too tightly around the expected treatment date. Medical schedules may change after an in-person examination or further testing, so allowing some flexibility can make both the treatment plan and immigration arrangements easier to manage.
